Horst Schender was provincial party chairman of the FPÖ Upper Austria; a long-serving deputy federal party chairman; chairman of the Freedom Party Education Institute and Ombudsman.
Short biography
Horst Schender was born in Linz on 16 August 1938. He graduated from a teacher training college and worked full-time as a teacher.
His political career began in 1967, when he became a member of the Linz municipal council. In 1973, he moved from the Linz municipal council to the Upper Austrian provincial parliament, where he remained until 1989.
In 1972 he also became provincial party chairman of the FPÖ Upper Austria, a position he held for 17 years. From 1976 to 1988 he also served as FPÖ deputy federal party chairman. In the 1980s, Schender was also chairman of the Freedom Party Education Institution (Freiheitliches Bildungswerk), which is now called the Political Academy of the Freedom Party of Austria (Freiheitliches Bildungsinstitut).
After his resignation as Upper Austrian provincial party chairman, Horst Schender was in 1989 nominated by the Freedom Party for the post of Ombudsman. He served two terms in this position, before going into political retirement in 2001.
